1、除……外；2、其他…… 

 

主要有三種搭配： 

 

1. 跟unless引導的句子（讓步狀語從句）連用，表示“除外”含義。 

 

2. 置放在連詞or之后使用，表示“及其他”的意思。 

 

3. 與than一起，通常用來否定句子的主語。意思是“除……外”，這里需要指出的是，“otherwise than”通常指“除以……方式之外”，這是該句型區(qū)別于“unless……otherwise”的特點。 

 

第一、與unless搭配，表示“除外”含義。 

 

In this Ordinance, unless the context otherwise requires, “state” means a territory or group of territories having its own law of nationality. (Laws of Hong Kong, Cap.30, Wills Ordinance, Art. 2) 

 

在本條例中﹐除文意另有所指外，“國家”指擁有本身國籍法的領域或一組領域。 

 

A notice under subjection (1) shall, unless it otherwise provides, apply to the income from any property specified therein as it applies to the property itself. 

 

根據第（1）款發(fā)出的通知書﹐除其中另有訂定外﹐亦適用于通知書內指明的財產的收入﹐一如適用于該項財產本身。 

 

In this contract, unless the context otherwise requires, “goods” means…… 

 

在本協議所稱“貨物”，除條款另有規(guī)定外，是指…… 

 

Unless in any enactment it is otherwise provided…… 

 

除成文法另有規(guī)定外…… 

 

由此可見，在otherwise和unless搭配使用時，unless放在從句句首，而otherwise放在主語和謂語之間，即： 

 

unless+主語+otherwise+謂語 

 

如果使用被動語態(tài)，則otherwise放在主語和be動詞后面，謂語的過去分詞前面，即： 

 

unless+主語+be動詞+otherwise+謂語的過去分詞 

 

第二、置放在連詞or之后使用，表示“及其他”的意思。 

 

Any person who by threats, persuasion or otherwise induces a witness or a party not to give evidence in any hearing before the Board commits an offence. 

 

任何人籍恐嚇﹑慫恿或以其它手段誘使證人或一方當事人不在仲裁處聆訊中作證﹐即屬犯罪。 

 

If 2 or more persons are defendants to a claim, as partners or otherwise, a process may be served on any of them and an award may be obtained and execution issued against any person so served notwithstanding that any other persons jointly liable may not have been served or been a party or may not be within the jurisdiction of the Board. 

 

如有2名或以上的人以合伙人或其它身分而屬同一宗申索的被告人﹐法律程序文件可送達予其中任何一人﹐而判定該收件人敗訴的裁定可由申索人獲得﹐執(zhí)行程序亦可向該受件人進行﹐即使任何其它共同有責的人可能未獲得送達法律程序文件﹐或不屬當事人﹐或不在仲裁處的司法管轄權范圍內﹐均無例外。 

 

Article 19 Irrevocable Offer An offer may not be revoked: (i) if it expressly indicates, whether by stating a fixed time for acceptance or otherwise, that it is irrevocable; (ii) if the offeree has reason to regard the offer as irrevocable, and has undertaken preparation for performance. 

 

第十九條有下列情形之一的，要約不得撤銷：(一)要約人確定了承諾期限或者以其他形式明示要約不可撤銷；(二)受要約人有理由認為要約是不可撤銷的，并已經為履行合同作了準備工作。 

 

or otherwise在上面的例句中翻譯成“及其他……”，其他后面接的名詞應當是or前面名詞的上位概念。 

 

舉個簡單的例子，比如：red, blue, black or otherwise……在這句中or前面的名詞是顏色，所以or otherwise應當翻譯成“及其他顏色”。 

 

需要注意的是，or otherwise中的otherwise不作定語，因此后面不能加名詞。 

 

or otherwise后面如果是動詞（包括動詞分詞），則or otherwise一般做狀語，可以理解或翻譯成“以其他方（形）式”。 

 

比如： 

 

“juridical person” means any legal entity duly constituted or otherwise organized under applicable law, whether for profit or … 

 

第三、與than一起，通常用來否定句子的主語。意思是“除……外”，這里需要指出的是，“otherwise than”通常指“除以……方式之外”，這是該句型區(qū)別于“unless……otherwise”的特點。 

 

No will or any part thereof shall be revoked otherwise than – (a) by marriage as provided by section 13; or (b) by another will executed in accordance with section 5; or… 

 

除籍以下方式外﹐任何遺囑的全部或任何部分﹐均不得撤銷–(a) 根據第13條的規(guī)定籍締結婚姻而撤銷﹔或(b) 籍按照第5條簽立的另一份遺囑而撤銷﹔或…… 

 

從上面的例句可以看出，otherwise than總是作副詞，用來修飾前面的動詞，后面主要是接一種方式，所以，該句型通常都是： 

 

動詞+otherwise than+by。 

 

除了otherwise than以外，還有other than的句型。other than和otherwise than的意思一樣，但語法不同。other than修飾動詞時，語法結構與otherwise than相同，但是other than除了可以修飾動詞，還可以修飾名詞。 

 

例如： 

 

Any person guilty of an offence under this Part, other than an offence under section 3, shall be liable…… 

 

在上面這句中，other than后面直接接的就是名詞。但是，otherwise than后面絕對不能加名詞。
